Empanadas are a popular dish enjoyed in many countries, especially in Latin America. Making homemade beef empanadas with a spicy filling is a fun and rewarding cooking project that results in delicious, flavorful pastries perfect for any meal or snack.

Ingredients Needed

  • 1 package of pre-made empanada dough or homemade dough
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 red chili or jalapeño, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg, beaten (for sealing and brushing)
  • Oil for frying or baking

Preparing the Filling

Start by heating a tablespoon of oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent. Then, add the minced garlic and chopped chili, cooking for another minute to release their flavors.

Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until browned and cooked through. Stir in the paprika, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

Assembling the Empanadas

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) if baking, or heat oil in a deep fryer for frying. Roll out the empanada dough and cut into circles using a cutter or a cup. Place a spoonful of the spicy beef filling in the center of each circle.

Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Seal the edges by pressing with a fork or pinching with your fingers. Brush the tops with beaten egg for a golden finish.

Cooking the Empanadas

If baking, place the empanadas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. For frying, carefully lower the empanadas into hot oil and fry until crispy and golden, about 3-4 minutes.

Serving Suggestions

Serve your homemade beef empanadas hot, accompanied by a side of salsa, sour cream, or a fresh salad. They are perfect for parties, picnics, or a satisfying meal at home.

Enjoy your spicy, savory empanadas, and experiment with different fillings or spice levels to suit your taste!
