Indian cuisine is renowned for its rich flavors and aromatic spices. One of the most beloved dishes is Butter Chicken, also known as Murgh Makhani. Making this dish at home allows you to enjoy authentic flavors with fresh ingredients and traditional spices.

Ingredients for Homemade Butter Chicken

  • 500g boneless chicken thighs or breasts
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 1 cup tomato puree
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander for garnish

Preparation Steps

Start by marinating the chicken. In a bowl, combine yogurt, lemon juice, garam masala, turmeric, chili powder, and a pinch of salt. Add the chicken pieces and coat well. Cover and let it marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight for deeper flavor.

Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the marinated chicken and cook until it’s browned and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Remove the chicken and set aside.

In the same skillet, add the chopped onion, garlic, and ginger. Sauté until the onion is translucent and fragrant. Then, add the tomato puree and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Lower the heat and stir in the remaining butter and heavy cream. Mix well and simmer for another 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Return the cooked chicken to the skillet, coat with the sauce, and cook for an additional 5 minutes.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the homemade Butter Chicken hot, garnished with fresh coriander. It pairs wonderfully with steamed basmati rice or warm naan bread. For an extra touch of authenticity, add a squeeze of fresh lemon before serving.

Tips for Success

  • Marinate the chicken overnight for maximum flavor.
  • Use fresh spices for a more aromatic dish.
  • Adjust the chili to your preferred spice level.
  • Simmer gently to prevent the cream from curdling.

Enjoy making this classic Indian dish at home and impress your family and friends with authentic flavors!
