Indonesian cuisine is renowned for its rich flavors and diverse dishes. One popular street food from Central Java is Sate Tegal, a delicious skewered meat dish marinated in a sweet and spicy sauce. Making Sate Tegal at home allows you to enjoy authentic flavors anytime.
Ingredients Needed
- 500 grams of chicken or beef, cut into cubes
- 10 bamboo skewers
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 shallots, sliced
- 2 red chilies, deseeded for less heat
- 2 tablespoons sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
- 1 tablespoon palm sugar
- 1 teaspoon tamarind paste
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Oil for grilling
Preparing the Marinade
In a blender, combine garlic, shallots, red chilies, sweet soy sauce, palm sugar, tamarind paste, salt, and pepper. Blend until smooth. This mixture will serve as the flavorful marinade for the meat.
Marinating and Grilling
Place the meat cubes in a bowl and pour the marinade over them. Mix well to ensure all pieces are coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight for maximum flavor.
Preheat your grill or barbecue. Thread the marinated meat onto bamboo skewers. Brush with a little oil to prevent sticking. Grill the skewers over medium heat, turning occasionally until the meat is cooked through and slightly charred, about 10-15 minutes.
Serving Suggestions
Serve the Sate Tegal hot with steamed rice or lontong (rice cake). You can also add a side of peanut sauce or sliced fresh vegetables for extra flavor. Enjoy the perfect combination of sweet, spicy, and savory in every bite!
