Bibimbap is a traditional Korean dish that combines rice, vegetables, meat, and a spicy gochujang sauce. Cooking it authentically at home can be simple and rewarding, especially when using a wok. This guide will walk you through the steps to prepare delicious bibimbap using your wok.

Ingredients Needed

  • 2 cups short-grain rice
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 1 cup bean sprouts
  • 1 carrot, julienned
  • 1 zucchini, julienned
  • 200g beef sirloin or ground beef
  • 2 eggs
  • Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • Sesame oil
  • Soy sauce
  • Garlic
  • Vegetable oil
  • Sesame seeds

Preparation Steps

Start by cooking the rice in your rice cooker or on the stove. Once cooked, set aside. While the rice is cooking, prepare the vegetables and meat.

Blanching Vegetables

Blanch the spinach and bean sprouts separately in boiling water for about 1 minute each. Drain and rinse with cold water. Toss each with a teaspoon of sesame oil, a pinch of salt, and minced garlic for added flavor.

Cooking the Meat

Slice the beef thinly. Marinate with soy sauce, minced garlic, a teaspoon of sesame oil, and a pinch of sugar if desired. Heat your wok over medium-high heat, add vegetable oil, and cook the beef until browned. Set aside.

Sautéing the Vegetables

Using the same wok, add a little more oil if needed. Sauté the carrots and zucchini separately until tender but still crisp. Season lightly with salt and sesame oil. Keep warm.

Assembling the Bibimbap

In each serving bowl, place a scoop of warm rice at the bottom. Arrange the cooked vegetables and meat on top, each in its own section for a colorful presentation. Fry an egg sunny side up in the wok or a separate pan.

Place the fried egg on top of the arranged ingredients. Add a dollop of gochujang in the center and drizzle with sesame oil. Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions if desired.

Serving Tips

Before eating, mix everything thoroughly to combine the flavors and textures. Serve hot for the best experience. Enjoy your homemade authentic Korean bibimbap!
