Indian Butter Chicken, also known as Murgh Makhani, is a rich and flavorful dish loved worldwide. Making authentic Butter Chicken at home might seem challenging, but with the right ingredients and steps, you can enjoy this delicious meal anytime.

Ingredients Needed

  • 500g boneless chicken thighs or breasts
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, grated
  • 1 can (400g) tomato puree
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Preparation Steps

Marinate the Chicken

In a bowl, combine yogurt, lemon juice, garam masala, turmeric, chili powder, and salt. Add the chicken pieces and coat well. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight for best flavor.

Cook the Chicken

Heat a grill or skillet over medium heat. Cook the marinated chicken until it is browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes per side. Set aside.

Prepare the Sauce

In a large pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent. Stir in garlic and ginger, cooking for another minute. Pour in the tomato puree and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Reduce heat and add the cooked chicken to the sauce. Stir in heavy cream and cook for another 5 minutes until the sauce thickens. Adjust salt and spice levels to taste.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the Butter Chicken hot, garnished with fresh cilantro. It pairs beautifully with basmati rice or naan bread, making for a complete and satisfying meal.
