Pulled pork sandwiches are a classic American comfort food loved by many. Making them at home allows you to enjoy tender, flavorful pork with your favorite toppings and buns. In this guide, you’ll learn how to make modern American-style pulled pork sandwiches that are perfect for any gathering or weeknight dinner.

Ingredients Needed

  • 3-4 pounds pork shoulder (also known as pork butt)
  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
  • Buns or rolls
  • Toppings: coleslaw, pickles, sliced onions

Preparation Steps

Start by preparing the dry rub. Mix paprika, salt, brown sugar, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper in a small bowl. Rub this mixture generously over the pork shoulder, ensuring all sides are coated.

Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Place the seasoned pork in a roasting pan or Dutch oven. Cover tightly with foil or a lid.

Cook the pork slowly for about 4-5 hours, or until the meat is tender and easily pulls apart with a fork. Alternatively, you can use a slow cooker set on low for 8 hours.

Once cooked, let the pork rest for 15 minutes. Then, shred the meat using two forks, discarding any excess fat or bones.

Assembling the Sandwiches

Mix the shredded pork with barbecue sauce for added flavor. Toast the buns lightly if desired. Pile the pulled pork onto the buns and add your favorite toppings such as coleslaw, pickles, or sliced onions.

Serve immediately and enjoy a delicious, modern American-style pulled pork sandwich.
