Step-by-Step Preparation
1. Cook the Rice
Rinse the rice several times until the water runs clear. Combine rice and water in a pot, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer covered for about 15 minutes. Let it rest for 10 minutes, then fluff with a fork. Mix in sesame oil and a pinch of salt.
2. Prepare Fillings
Cook the eggs into a thin omelet and slice into strips. Julienne the cucumber and carrots. Prepare any additional fillings like seasoned spinach or cooked beef. Arrange everything in small bowls for easy assembly.
3. Assemble the Gimbap
Place a sheet of seaweed on a bamboo mat or flat surface. Spread a thin layer of rice evenly over the seaweed, leaving about 1 inch at the top edge. Lay your fillings in a line across the bottom third of the rice.
Using the bamboo mat, carefully roll the seaweed over the fillings, pressing gently to shape the roll. Seal the edge with a little water if needed. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
