Brazilian fish stew with coconut milk, known as Moqueca, is a flavorful and aromatic dish that captures the essence of Brazilian cuisine. Its rich combination of fresh fish, coconut milk, and spices makes it a popular choice for both everyday meals and special occasions. In this article, we will guide you through the steps to prepare this delicious dish at home.

Ingredients Needed

  • 1 lb (450 g) firm white fish fillets (such as cod or snapper)
  • 1 can (13.5 oz) coconut milk
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 bell peppers (red and yellow), sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 bunch cilantro, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: chili flakes for heat

Preparation Steps

Start by preparing the fish. Cut the fillets into large chunks and season them with salt, pepper, and lime juice. Set aside to marinate briefly while you prepare the other ingredients.

In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Then, add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Add the sliced bell peppers and chopped tomatoes to the pot. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables soften.

Pour in the coconut milk and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Add salt, pepper, and chili flakes if you like some heat. Let it simmer for 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Carefully add the marinated fish chunks to the stew. Cover the pot and cook for another 10 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through and opaque.

Finally, sprinkle chopped cilantro over the stew and serve hot. This dish pairs beautifully with white rice or farofa (toasted cassava flour).

Tips for Perfect Moqueca

  • Use fresh fish for the best flavor.
  • Adjust the spice level with chili flakes according to your taste.
  • Let the stew rest for a few minutes before serving to enhance the flavors.
  • Garnish with extra cilantro for a fresh finish.
