The Tortilla Española, also known as the Spanish omelette, is a classic dish that showcases the simplicity and richness of Spanish cuisine. Making a perfect homemade tortilla requires mastering a few key techniques and understanding the ingredients involved.

Ingredients Needed

  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 medium potatoes
  • 1 small onion
  • Salt to taste
  • Olive oil

Preparation Steps

Begin by peeling the potatoes and slicing them thinly. Finely chop the onion. In a large skillet, heat generous amounts of olive oil over medium heat.

Add the sliced potatoes and onions to the skillet. Cook gently, stirring occasionally, until the potatoes are tender but not browned. This process usually takes about 10-15 minutes.

While the potatoes and onions are cooking, beat the eggs in a bowl and add a pinch of salt. Once cooked, drain the potatoes and onions from excess oil and add them to the beaten eggs. Mix well.

Cooking the Tortilla

Heat a smaller amount of olive oil in a clean skillet over medium heat. Pour the egg, potato, and onion mixture into the skillet, spreading it evenly.

Cook for about 4-5 minutes until the edges are set. Carefully flip the tortilla using a plate or a lid, then slide it back into the skillet to cook the other side for another 4-5 minutes.

Serving Tips

Allow the tortilla to rest for a few minutes before slicing. It can be served warm or at room temperature. For an authentic experience, enjoy it with crusty bread and a glass of Spanish wine.

Practice makes perfect. With time, you’ll master the technique of flipping and achieving a golden, evenly cooked tortilla Española every time.
