Turkish coffee is a rich and flavorful tradition that has been enjoyed for centuries. Brewing authentic Turkish coffee requires attention to detail and patience. This step-by-step guide will help you master the art of making this iconic beverage at home.
Ingredients and Equipment Needed
- Finely ground Turkish coffee
- Cold water
- Sugar (optional)
- Turkish coffee pot (cezve or ibrik)
- Spoon for stirring
- Small cups for serving
Preparation Steps
1. Measure the Water
Use the small cups you plan to serve the coffee in as a measure. Fill the cezve with one cup of cold water per serving.
2. Add Coffee and Sugar
For each cup of water, add one heaping teaspoon of finely ground Turkish coffee. If you like your coffee sweet, add sugar to taste: no sugar (sade), little sugar (az şekerli), or more sugar (çok şekerli).
3. Mix the Ingredients
Stir the mixture gently until the coffee and sugar are dissolved. Do not stir after this point to allow the coffee to brew properly.
4. Heat the Coffee
Place the cezve on low heat. As the coffee heats, a foam will form on top. Do not stir during this process. Keep a close eye to prevent boiling over.
Serving the Coffee
Once the foam has risen, remove the cezve from heat. Spoon some foam into each cup, then pour the remaining coffee gently into the cups. Let it sit for a minute to allow the grounds to settle.
Enjoying Turkish Coffee
