Caramel apples are a delicious treat enjoyed by many during the fall season. Making them at home allows you to customize flavors and enjoy a fun activity with family and friends. In this guide, we’ll walk you through each step to create perfect homemade caramel apples.
Ingredients and Supplies
- 4 large apples (Granny Smith or Fuji work well)
- 1 cup caramel candies or caramel sauce
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
- Optional toppings: chopped nuts, sprinkles, chocolate chips
- Wooden sticks or skewers
- Wax paper or parchment paper
- Cooking pot
- Cooking spray or butter (for greasing)
Preparation Steps
Start by washing and thoroughly drying the apples. Remove the stems and insert a wooden stick or skewer into the top of each apple. Place the apples on a tray lined with wax paper.
Making the Caramel
In a saucepan, melt the caramel candies over low heat. Stir constantly to prevent burning. Once melted, add the heavy cream or milk and mix until smooth and creamy. Remove from heat.
Dipping the Apples
Hold each apple by the stick and dip it into the caramel sauce, turning to coat evenly. Allow excess caramel to drip off. If desired, roll the caramel-coated apple in chopped nuts, sprinkles, or other toppings while the caramel is still soft.
Setting and Serving
Place the coated apples on the prepared tray and let the caramel set at room temperature or in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. Once set, they are ready to enjoy. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
